Powered by Purpose, a community initiative of United Way of Central Iowa and its partners, launched the Powered by Goal Organizational Journeya free online program designed to help businesses and nonprofits more intentionally identify and share their organization’s purpose.

The Powered by Purpose organizational journey is based on research that shows organizations with a stated purpose have increased employee engagement, brand loyalty, and business growth, among other benefits.

Developed by United Way of Central Iowa, Navigate Wellbeing Solutions, ethOs – a division of Holmes Murphy and Project Iowa, the Organizational Journey encourages organizations to hire a task force of current team members to complete the program online. leading to identify or clarify the purpose of the organization together.

The Journey includes a facilitator’s guide, instructional videos, several discovery activities, and an online account to save notes on working group discussions. At the end of the program, teams will have an organizational goal statement and ideas for activating the goal in the workplace.

“Studies on the importance of purpose for organizations and individuals were already published before the pandemic,” said Jessica Nelsen, community impact health and wellness coordinator for United Way of Central Iowa. “We’re seeing a trend right now where job seekers are taking a closer look at workplace culture and choosing to work for organizations that they believe contribute to something bigger and align with their own values. “

In the fall of 2020, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 90% of employees would be willing to make 23% less money to do work they believed was meaningful. Additionally, a 2022 LinkedIn survey found that 52% of job seekers said they wouldn’t accept a job offer if they didn’t know or disagree. with a company’s mission, values or purpose.

“Goaling has a significant impact on overall health and well-being, and according to the Gallup Wellbeing Index, Central Iowa lags behind in goal wellbeing,” said Nelson said. “If more organizations in our community can clearly identify and articulate their purpose, they will attract candidates who are most likely to connect with the position and commit to the overall mission of the organization. The result will be a healthier, more loyal workforce and an overall stronger community. It really is a win-win for everyone.
